How to filter gmail to avoid unwanted emails but not spams

Sometimes it happens that we don't want to see some message in our primary inbox of gmail but want those emails from a particular site/user to go directly to a particular folder. And when we have time we read the mails. This is the basic filtering method of Gmail and everybody can employ it in their inbox.
The process for filtering gmail -
  • First create a folder where you want to send email from a user. Say we want the mail from John to be in a separate place, then create folder named John.
  • Go to the setting, the gear symbol at top right corner.
  • From drop down select setting again.
  • Go to filters option.
  • Click on the create a new filter.
  • Type the name 'John' in the 'From' option. You can filter by anythings such as 'the text contains' etc.
  • Click on the create a filter with this search.
  • In the next box a click skip the inbox and apply the label 'John' you have created in the beginning.
  • Click create filter to create the filter.
These are the steps by which you can create a filter in gmail.
